Follow His Word

When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priest, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. Joshua 3:3–4

Clark and Maya waved their ribbon bedecked wands as they walked down the aisle past the rows filled with happy smiling people. The attached bells rang with a little twinkling sound, making the role of ring bearer and flower girl so much more exciting.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until suddenly, Clark slowed to a complete stop halfway down the aisle. The joy had gone out of his smile and the colorful wand hung limply from his fingers as he stared at all the strangers around him.

When he had practiced his important job, the chairs had been empty and he could easily see his father as he stood at the end of the long aisle. Now Clark didn’t know what to do. What began as a fun adventure, had turned into something scary and confusing.

In Joshua chapter 3, the Israelites were preparing to cross the Jordan River and enter unknown territory. They would be facing challenges they had never experienced during their 40 years in the desert. The Lord knew they would be feeling scared and confused, not knowing what to do or where to go next. So the Lord told His people, follow the ark (which contained the Word of God), then they would know which way to go.

As we face new challenges and enter territory we have never been in before, we can become easily confused and lost, wondering what to do next and where to go. Even if we have planned and prepared for it, living it out can be overwhelming.

The Lord encourages us to keep our eyes on Him and follow His Word. Do what you have practiced. Read God’s Word and do what it says, especially when facing unknown territory. Trust the Lord, believe in His promises and keep walking out your faith.

For Clark, our little ringbearer, he finally lifted his eyes past the many unknown faces to see his father standing at the front, waving his arms and beckoning him to come. And that’s all it took, off he went running down the aisle, happy and smiling again as he waved his ribboned wand, heading right into the waiting arms of his daddy.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, how we love your Word. Thank you for your guidance and direction in our lives. What joy and peace we have, when we live in obedience to you. In Jesus name. Amen.
