So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. 2 Thessalonians 1:11
I could feel the sweat run down my forehead and hover for a moment before it sloshed into my eye. As I blinked back the moisture, I paused from our hike to use the shoulder of my shirt to blot my face dry. How much farther was this elusive waterfall, I wondered? We had been scaling steeply downhill for over an hour, climbing over roots and hanging on to branches as we continued descending into the hot and humid jungles of Oahu, Hawaii.
We had been promised that the waterfall at the bottom of the steep ravine was spectacular and well worth the three-mile trek, but I was beginning to have my doubts. I was exhausted as I looked down at the mud that covered my shoes, with splatters going as high as my knees. The backside of my pants was not the same color as the front, as we would sit on ledges, before dropping down onto the ever-descending path.
Finally, we arrived at our destination. The waterfall was indeed beautiful with a glistening pool floating out before it. I could almost feel the cool, clear water on my dirty hot skin, as I gazed at its topical splendor.
But joy slowly turned to frustration as I realized only jungle creatures and athletes under the age of 30 could get down to the falls and pool. I watched with envy as they frolicked in the water, cooling off and enjoying the fruits of their hard scramble downhill.
What was the purpose of all my time, energy and toil? It had all been for nothing, I couldn’t reach the falls or pool. And I still had to scale back up to the top of the ravine, which would probably be harder than the downhill portion. What a tremendous disappointment! But what a wonderful example for our lives.
We need to make sure that what we are spending all of our energy and time on is worthwhile. That it has purpose and is worth the effort. We don’t want to look back at the end of our lives and say, “What was it all for?”
Where are you going? What are all your efforts and time leading to? Live a life of purpose that is worthy of God’s call on your life. Make your time count.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, we ask you to give us the power to accomplish all the good things our faith prompts us to do. Help us to live a life of purpose and meaning. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
