Fire in the Woods

Your faith, being more precious than gold,… even though tested by fire, will resort in praise and glory to God.” 1 Peter 1:7

As the fire raged in the woods behind our house, fear gripped our hearts. We could hear the crackling of the oncoming flames, see the falling ash and smell the ever increasing smoke as it began to permeate the air. Most neighbors were thinking, how is this fire going to affect me? Will our backyards burn? Will we have to evacuate our homes?

Even as we were concerned for the fire fighters and the beautiful woods, our thoughts continued to turn inward.

Sudden change, just like a sweeping fire can be devastating to us. The loss of a loved one, broken bones, divorce, children heading to college, sickness, and finances, the list can go on and on. Change can feel like a fire raging through our lives; we can see the flames as they lick at our carefully constructed, patterned days.

This is not how I saw my life going! This was not supposed to happen! As anxiety and fear creep up our arms and encircle our hearts, the fire of change can burn away our joy in life.

Where is the Lord, in the fire that is consuming me? Why did He allow this to happen? Doesn’t He love me?

The fire of change is the trials of our lives, and we will all experience them. The question is will our faith remain after the fire passes? The Lord tells us in 1 Peter 1:7 “trials are only to test our faith, to show that it is strong and pure.”

When the fire of change comes raging into your life, stand strong. Don’t let circumstances steal your joy in life, stand on the promises of God, and choose to believe them, no matter what fire is creeping up on you.

Hebrews 13: 5 “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.

Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.”

Matthew 11:28. “Come to me; all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”

After two hours, the firemen were able to contain the fire. Three acres of underbrush had burned, but our wooded green space behind our neighborhood was saved, as were our homes.

Trust and seek the Lord during the trials of your life and He will see you through every one.

Prayer: Thank you Heavenly Father for your peace and presence through every situation. Amen.
