““But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear. I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but they didn’t see it. And they longed to hear what you hear, but they didn’t hear it.” Matthew 13:16-17 NLT
I love the Old Testament…. I love all the stories of these amazing people and prophets of old. To read of their reliance on God, how they walked and talked with Him. How they had such complete faith and trust! To learn all their flaws, fears and poor decisions and see how God still used them for great and powerful things…. men and women alike! Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Deborah, Rehab, Elijah, Esther, and David…. just to name a few. All powerful people of faith and prayer that loved and feared God. These people saw many, many miracles, powerful, awesome wonders performed by God. They saw animals calmly walk into an ark in pairs, a shout tear down thick walls, fire come down from heaven, and watched as entire armies destroyed themselves….
And yet, in the New Testament, Jesus tells us that we have even more potential then these prophets of old. They longed to have the intimacy we can have with our Heavenly Father. They longed to see what we can see, to hear what we can hear. Imagine what we could do if we truly, deep down in our souls, understood the power of God’s love for us. We can call down the fire of the Holy Spirit, tear down walls of indifference, flood the entire world with His love, and we can move mountains in faith. All this potential to change the world is available to us! Because of God’s greatest gift to us…. Jesus. The blessing of eyes that see Jesus at work in our lives, and ears that hear His Word. The awesome potential we have in an intimate relationship with the Creator of the world.
Prayer: Dearest Jesus, thank You for the blessing of eyes that can see & ears that can hear. Help us to fulfill the potential You gave us to change this world by Your sacrifice. Amen
