Glory in Christ Jesus

Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God. Romans 15:17

When I was young my brother and sister and I would help my mom decorate the tree at Christmas time. Or, that’s what we thought we were doing.

How exciting it was! The Christmas music would be playing as we opened boxes and laid out all the colored ornaments for the tree. We felt so special and grown-up, sipping our eggnog from champagne glasses as we got to help with the task of decorating the tree.

We were busy little elves, running back and forth, from coffee table to tree, with our ornaments in hand. Hanging them right where we could admire them the most. Then came the task of putting the tinsel on the tree. Mom would buy a new box every year and we would sprinkle tinsel all over the tree. It was so shiny and lovely and so much fun to put on. We would have to toss it up high to reach the upper branches. After our hard work, we would scurry off to bed, feeling proud of ourselves for helping mom with this very important task.

But unbeknownst to us, the tree was not quite done yet. Mom would stay up late and lovingly re-decorate the tree. All the ornaments we had put on, only covered the first three feet and they were all scrunched together in the front of the tree. So she would spread them out and cover the tree more evenly. The tinsel we had thrown on the tree was replaced by meticulously layered strands of silver, fanning out on selected branches.

When we woke up the next morning, we ran to look at the tree, we had worked so hard on the night before. We would plug in the lights, and then gaze in wonder at the beautiful tree we had decorated. Oh, how proud we were! What joy it was to help our mother with such an important task.

I wonder why mother let us help? She could’ve done the job so much easier by herself. I think she knew there was kingdom training afoot. For isn’t that exactly what our Heavenly Father does for us?

He let’s us help with the special task of serving in His kingdom and spreading the good news of His Son Jesus Christ. And we are so proud and happy to help our Lord with this important work. But I think, when we get to heaven, we will realize the Lord took our simple effort’s and multiplied them by the Holy Spirit, turning our feeble gifts of service into beautiful gems of glittery brilliance.

Prayer: Thank you Father, for the privilege of serving in your kingdom. I know that anything I am able to accomplish is only made possible by your loving Spirit. And oh, how much fun it is to help you Jesus. How special you make me feel. I love you so much, Lord. Amen.
